Yeasayer is an ‘experimental’ rock band from Brooklyn, New York. Odd Blood is their second full-length album and first for Secretly Canadian. It was released February 8th.
YAY :
- It’s a pretty different album from most things you’re going to hear on a daily basis. By different I mean the offerings are pretty varied. There’s tracks that sound a bit Bollywood, some dance worthy songs, weird vocal effects, and even a song that sounds like a mix between Justin Timberlake and Depeche Mode.
- Though it is varied, it’s a lot more ‘poppy’ than their previous album’s psych-folk vibe. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed their last album, but this is better than their debut.
- “Mondegreen” is a ‘barn-burner’ . It makes me want to dance, and I never want to dance. The funky bass(or synth) line, the horns, the guitar lick, it all works together so well. Let’s not forget about the sing-along chorus. I could listen to that song again and again.
- It gets better with repeat listens.
NAY :
- “Love Me Girl”, while a good song, is a little too close musically to a Justin Timberlake song. If you listen to this around 5:30 in you should get what I’m talking about. During the beginning part without vocals as well as the section around three minutes in with the keyboard I can just hear “what goes around comes back around” in my head.
What Yeasayer has here is a great and varied album that is well worth the price of admission. You’re going to want to listen to this with headphones on if you can. There’s some stuff you’re going to miss if you listen to it through speakers. Don’t dismiss it based on the ‘weirdness’ of the first track either, give the whole album a listen.
If I ever have the desire to make a ‘party mix’ you can be sure that “Mondegreen” will be on it.
