You’re The Worst

you're the worstYou’re the Worst is the second show in FX’s Thursday night “Horrible People Hour”. But, unlike Married where there’s a central couple surrounded by friends that are probably worse than they are, You’re the Worst gives the central couple friends that seem to have their best interests in mind. I’ll get to that in a minute.

The central couple is Jimmy (Chris Geere), a writer whose first book isn’t doing as well as he’d hoped; and Gretchen (Aya Cash), a publicist with seemingly one client – a Tyler the Creator-like rapper. After bailing on a wedding at the same time, they end up going home together. They then agree to move forward with a relationship, that isn’t really a relationship, with no expectations of anything good coming from it.

The next few episodes show how expectations do form no matter how hard you try and that sometimes it is more important to hate the same things than like the same things. Paul Rudd‘s character in Roles Models would love that idea.

The ball seems to be in Jimmy’s court most of the time when it comes to how things will move forward, and for the most part he seems content with, or stupid enough, to do the bare minimum. That would probably happen if it weren’t for his roommate Edgar (Desmin Borges). Edgar is like Jimmy’s guardian angel. For a little bit I was wondering if they were trying to pull a Sixth Sense and make it so Edgar was a representation of Jimmy’s conscience, while Jimmy himself is the devil on his own shoulder most of the time. But no, Edgar is real. Other characters in the show talk to him. I think the writers realized how much he represented “good”, so around episode three or four they have him almost buy heroin to show that he’s still a flawed person, no matter how wise he seems.

Gretchen sort of has that person who’s looking out for her in her friend Lindsay (Kether Donohue). Ok, so maybe Lindsay isn’t all that wise or spouting advice all the time, but she plays a role that needs to be played in important situations for her friend. Like in last week’s excellent episode where she told Jimmy that Gretchen might be going on a private plane with a part-time fling. Then Jimmy spends the rest of the episode trying to get Gretchen to choose between something he thinks is cool and different, and something he thinks is boring and mundane, without telling her which is which. Before finally telling her that he doesn’t want her to go.

Their relationship seems to be blossoming into something real, and as long as it remains as interesting and funny as it has been we’ll still be watching.

You’re The Worst airs Thursday nights at 10:30 on FX.
