Weekend Wonderer – Terminator Franchise

Posted by Jamie ConcepcionJamie Concepcion On April - 17 - 2010

Looking for something to do this weekend? Why not indulge yourself in the watchable entries in the Terminator franchise(by watchable I mean movie or TV)? So what if there’s rampant discrepancies in the timelines depending on which entry your watching. It’s still entertaining.

These are in order based on when they take place in John Connor’s life.

Terminator - The granddaddy and best reviewed of them all. Kyle Reese, a man from the future, needs to protect Sarah Connor from Schwarzenegger’s menacing robot so her unborn son can become the leader of the resistance against the machines.  More of a thriller than a straight up action movie. If you’ve never seen this you NEED to.

*

Terminator 2 - What is arguably the best of them all, and what is most likely the fan-favorite. A now 12 year old John Connor is being hunted by a brand new type of Terminator. It’s up to a hacked Schwarzenegger model and a now much more bad-ass John’s mother to keep him alive. The special effects in this were great for its time and the chase scenes are amazing.

*

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles  - A great show on Fox that depicted John as a teenager on the run with his mom and a female terminator named Cameron. Don’t dismiss this because it’s a series, it’s worth your time.

*

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines - In this John is in his 20′s. Since he has gone completely dark and the machines can’t find him they send a terminator back in time to kill his lieutenants. The resistance sends Schwarzenegger back again to protect John and a certain lieutenant of his. A lot of people frowned upon this one, but it gives a lot more insight into how Judgment Day actually occurs.

*

Terminator Salvation - OK, this one is kind of the turd in the punch bowl. John Connor is now fully grown, married, and expecting a child(yay tie-ins). He really needs a throat lozenge and he isn’t the leader of the resistance yet. The robots look cool and the special effects are alright, but this really lacks the awesome chase scenes that define the franchise. Could they really not have cast someone cooler to play young Kyle Reese too?

There you go. Enjoy them while you can because Judgment Day is coming, or was already supposed to happen depending on what you watch.
