Webcomic of the Week – The Superest

Posted by Dillon St. JeanDillon St. Jean On July - 30 - 2010

I feel like this week I may be cheating, but that’s only because I technically am.  The Superest, while an awesome project and a very entertaining premise, is not exactly, truly, entirely a webcomic.  In reality The Supererst is a drawing contest that took place between artists Kevin Cornell and Matthew Sutter wherein one of them would draw a rather bizarre concept for a superhero and then the other would draw a character that could, for one reason or another, defeat the previous creation.  It went on like that for quite a while, with some very interesting and peculiar ideas tossed around.  What surprised me is that before beginning my highlight of The Superest the project came to a close.  This is what happens when I don’t check things often enough.

The concept was so simple and yet so brilliant and fun.  Some of them would be these terrible puns and some of them were these masterfully clever ideas.  Either way the battle between these two very capable artists raged for quite a while.  Starting in 2007 they began with ‘The Unopposinator’ and just kept going on from there, with good art and sometimes ridiculous jokes.  Within just a short amount of time they had created this colossal continuity of characters.  This vibrant, outrageous and hilarious universe of superheroes who just happen to all act as counteractions to the heroes that precede them.

It’s always disappointing to see such an enjoyable experiment in art and comedy end, but truthfully it would be a shame to never get the chance to see what else these two brilliant minds could cobble together.  The Superest was a very entertaining idea and quite enjoyable but I suppose all good things must come to an end.  To see so many characters created just to act as a negating force to the character that came before them is funny, but you’d love to see what else Cornell and Sutter can do.  As detail on the site, they clearly are capable of any number of different ideas.  So I recommend The Superest this week just because it is what it’s name implies: super…est.
