Webcomic of the Week – The Meek

Posted by Dillon St. JeanDillon St. Jean On May - 1 - 2010

The Meek by Der-shing Helmer is an outstanding comic.  Not just for the art but for the fact that the story is very intriguing.  In the midst of an oncoming war, it has been said that Angora, a young wood-fairing girl, will be the one to save the world.  Her grandfather tells her to go into the civilized world because she has some sort of impending fate of being a hero, despite the fact that she seems pretty young and inexperienced.  However, she has a bit of a talent in her connection to nature, which shows when she meets Pinter, a frequent drinker and hermit within the community she stumbles upon.

Meanwhile, Luca deSadar is the Emperor of the Northern Territories who cannot seem to get a grip on his position in government or his position in his family.  He has troubles with his wife and his relationships with his children leave a lot to be desired.  While dealing with this, there appears to be a war coming soon, which could be leading Luca to a less stable place than he was once in.  According to the site, there are more major characters yet to be revealed that will likely have their own story ongoing, eventually tying into the others.  Perhaps this war is what Angora needs to stop?

The writing is good, keeping the perfect balance of seriousness and lightheartedness.  Just in case any of you are sensitive children, keep in mind that Angora is a topless jungle-girl.  So at the very least don’t read this comic at work.  Or in class.  Or while you’re babysitting.  Ignoring that most minor of details, the story is incredibly interesting.  Prophecies, creatures, royalty, fights, fear, anger, betrayal, and booze.  And we’re only on the second issue of the series.  The Meek has a lot going on for it.  For now the main storyline is planned for full release online, so hopefully that will remain true.  However, this comic is of such a great quality that I honestly wouldn’t mind holding something tangible in my hands to read this.  And no, not a Kindle.

Amazing artwork, good writing, interesting dialogue and a cool story.  Seriously check this out and get caught up, you’ve got no reason not to.
