Remember how I said Dr. McNinja’s colorist Anthony Clark had his own webcomic? Well here we go.
Anthony’s site is Nedroid, where he does comics about two best friends Reginald and Beartato. I like to assume that a Beartato is made when you take a potato and you honey roast it. Hard. Like, with intensity and stuff. But yeah, the two are close friends who go on adventures and spend a lot of time just learning about things. Mainly because they know so very little.
The comic is pretty funny just because it manages to be pretty simple in it’s jokes about the duo. What I find the most interesting is that unlike many pairs, Reginald and Beartato seem to be pretty equal in their friendship. Normally Reginald would be set up as the character who holds all the cards, but nay, for the most part they are treated very much as equals. Their friend Harrison however is not often given the spotlight. Some sharks just never manage to have their time. But the relationship between the best friends is traditionally equal, allowing the two the chance to share a lot of fun, awesome things.
Frankly my favorite part of the series is of course Beartato. He’s good with the ladies. He’s good with science. He’s a tiny bear with little arms and legs. And he’s always got a gigantic grin on his little bear face which implies that he knows what you did. Oh, he knows. But apart from that, what often drives a lot of the comedy is the facial expressions. Anthony does a really good job of expressing emotion and meaning in the looks of his characters, despite their very simple designs. Sometimes you can tell just how furious Reginald is by the placement of his eyes.
The only thing I ever have issue with is the name of the series. I don’t know if it’s Nedroid, or Reginald and Beartato, and Beartato and Reginald, or SUPER HAPPY GO TIME (the least likely of scenarios) but I seriously wish I was more capable of deciphering what is likely an incredibly easy bit of information. Reveal your secrets, Anthony! Beyond that, give this series a look purely because it’s pretty damn hilarious and has some enjoyable characters.
