So I thought I might try a little something different on the site by taking a look every week at a different webcomic I feel deserves a nice spotlight. This week the subject is Let’s Be Friends Again by Curt Franklin and Chris Haley. LBFA is a comic that does the occasional comic book commentary, making jokes about things like Batman and Robin, or Blackest Night. And frankly, they do a damn good job of making those jokes effective.
Whether they’re taking shots at each other or at the books they love to read, they have a great sense of humor that often refrains from alienating people who may or may mot be very big into comics. Of course, being that I’m a big comic book fan, I could hear jokes about a Giant-Size Man-Thing all day. But beyond that they do a few jokes about friendship and politics, which actually work well with the theme they’ve selected for their comic. They also do the usual, with jokes about video games and anime, but seeing a webcomic where most of the jokes are about DC and Marvel is kind of refreshing. And hell, just try and tell me Twilight jokes are getting old. Because they aren’t.
With a number of the jokes they manage to go pretty sadistic towards characters we’re well familiarized with, and that works out quite a bit. Even taking shots at Family Circus and Garfield comes across as interesting despite how popular a target they usually are. The art is solid (for the most part), the jokes are there, and the substance is pretty awesome. If you’re looking for a nice number of comic book jokes about your favorite/least favorite characters, you should get a kick out of Let’s Be Friends Again.
