I felt like taking a look at something a little different this week by observing a limited story entitled Josh & Imp. A story by Jon Bernhardt and art by Diana Nock, it’s about a young man named Josh who meets the teenage sidekick of his city’s Batman-like superhero. Josh and Imp are out on a date, exploring the details of their relationship and the problems that comes along with trying to be intimate with a masked super-heroine. Secret identities are tough, especially when it comes to trying to express one’s feelings.
The couple spend the day together, attempting to reconcile their issues with trying to be together. There’s a great deal of that overbearing parent concept when the issue of The Devil (Imp’s boss) comes up. He doesn’t approve of their being together, despite how Imp feels about Josh. Josh has to do his best to remain strong in the face of danger that is her boss, and must prove as he can that he deserves to be a part of Imp’s life. From playing with superhero equipment (not like that, just try being an adult) to dealing with terrible former relationships, Josh & Imp has an amazing little story in it, and deals with some great teenage relationship stuff.
The characters of Josh and Imp are pretty enjoyable. They’re just a normal pair of teens who happen to be dealing with the adversity of one being a superhero sidekick. I really like stories like this, with superheroes, yet they happen to be secondary to what the story is. This is a relationship comic. It explores Josh and Imp trying to work through all the hell that comes from being in a high school relationship, while having to focus on the additional trouble of superhero danger and possible supervillain attack. Awesome little short story, very fun to read and very interesting. Give it a look; it’ll be worth your time.
