I love the look of this comic.
Johnny Wander is a very interesting and entertaining comic that has a great, professional look. Written by Ananth, drawn by Yuko and developed by Conrad (all cast members to the series) this comic follows them, along with a number of their friends, and some strange or peculiar things they encounter in their lives. The pacing of the comic is perfect. They don’t attempt to do anything too elaborate or crazy. They’re just really enjoyable stories about these friends and their attempting to put their adult lives together.
I think part of why I love this series so much has to do with the fact that I love Scott Pilgrim. They admit to being fans of the series and there are a couple similarities to be found in this type of comic. The art is kind of similar in some ways, and the elements of storytelling and transitions also resemble the series. I seem to be getting into this habit of reading mostly black and white comics lately. Visually the comic is perfect, especially their children’s book-like setup of the different sections their series appears to come to.
From time to time they’ll change things up to do a story about Death and the girl he loves, or about a blind girl named Delilah and her pet Basilisk. But for the most part we’re treated to strips about cooking, pets (not “cooking pets”), holidays, music, cleanliness, and some creepy people they come across. My favorite part is when these elements cross over in certain strips (again, not “cooking pets”).
This series has a great way of delivering the funny, thankfully not by excessive dialogue that over-explains jokes. Sometimes it comes from a weird situation, but sometimes it happens when something strikes someone in the face. So I tend to enjoy that. But really this series is just an enjoyable read mostly because it doesn’t spend a lot of time bashing things. Really it’s just good commentary about crazy and cute situations or mistakes that happen to everyone. And sometimes it’s about how little kids get turned to stone. I enjoy that too.
