Autobiographical webcomics are bountiful on the web. Still, there are a few here and there that manage to stick out. For me, Allan is one of those comics. It follows author Allan Wood, a young man who chronicles his life day by day in his drawings. By all accounts, Allan is just a nice kid who made a webcomic and is struggling to figure out what else he wishes to do. Every now and then his personal stories show a lot about who he is, how he lives, and what funny things can happen to some people.
There’s a lot Allan covers: his friends, his new relationship with a fellow webcomic artist, his parents, and his recent self-removal from college. A great deal of the art is rather simplistic, but it doesn’t need to be intensely detailed. When you consider just how often he posts, it’s not really that big of a deal. He has the potential to write very eloquently, and manages to get in a few good shots of humor every now and then. For some reason, though, I like best the fact that his strip is very charming.
Not too many creators will be willing to reveal so much, but Allan seems to be pretty free with what he covers. Not only that, but it seems to translate rather well that Allan enjoys what he does, and that makes the story much more enjoyable to follow. He has a dedication to telling his story, especially considering that it is, in fact, his story. He manages to narrate very well and still leave time to make with the funny, despite how personal things may seem to get. Allan is a very pleasant comic that seems to stick out as far as autobiographical webcomics go. Definitely worth taking a look.
