Turf is a five-part series written by Jonathan Ross with art by Tommy Lee Edwards that is being published by Image comics. I’ll be talking about the first issue. It starts out in 1929 with a storyline dedicated to some of the lowly acts committed during prohibition. Should Turf muscle its way into your collection? Spoilers Ahead
YAY :
- It starts out really well with the depictions of a lot of prohibition era gang violence. This continues throughout the issue.
- The shake-ups going on within NYC are being presented in a very exciting way and make this worth reading.
- A great amount of story exists in these relatively few pages
- The last page shows you something in all four story lines that makes you really want to read the next issue.
NAY :
- If the title didn’t already clue you in (don’t feel bad, I had no idea) vampires are involved. Why do vampires have to be involved?
- The vampires have a butler that has an accent. He says things like “vill” and “vish” instead of will and wish, but he said ‘what’ and not ‘vhat’. Does that make sense? (example below)
- Oh yeah, something about aliens. I honestly have no idea how aliens are going to tie into this but they exist in this comic.
Turf definitely has an interesting first issue. There’s enough violence and good storytelling to keep most people reading. Why vampires had to be included instead of just making it a gang tale we’ll have to wait to find out. Where this alien business fits into the narrative we’ll also have to wait to find out. But, I know one thing, I’m going to be reading the second issue when it comes out. I suggest you look into it.
