Shows That Aren’t Lost: Supernatural

Posted by Dillon St. JeanDillon St. Jean On February - 5 - 2010

Seriously, let’s not forget that there’s other stuff going on.  24 is back.  Smallville is still… just… awful.  Also, this is the final season of Supernatural, the show about two brothers fighting demons and monsters across the country.  Frankly I’m much more interested in how Supernatural is going to end, because it doesn’t confuse the holy hell out of me.  Hell, Supernatural, defying all odds due to being on the CW, has some of the best writing I’ve seen on television for a sci-fi show.  Despite having so many episodes that appear at first glance to be filler stories, they all manage to apply to and further the plot of the season.  Now we’re watching the lead up to the big battle between Michael and Lucifer, assuming Sam and Dean allow the fight to take place.

Supernatural is pretty great for a lot of reasons.  Funny dialogue, great stories, and a couple of the coolest characters on television.  The original concept for the show, wherein a couple of brothers ride around and fight the creatures of urban legend and rumor, was immediately all it took to get me interested.  However, it then took a pretty sharp turn into faith-based lunacy, revolving much of the show around the boys fighting the forces of Satan.  The show does great stuff to keep the interest of the viewer, often throwing some harsh truths towards Sam and Dean Winchester.  For example, the end of the halfway point of this season had the boys lose a couple of close allies as well as their finding out that the only weapon they were counting on would be of no use to them whatsoever.  As soon as you think some things could go a little bit better for the brothers, something really, really bad happens, and yet the show is set up to keep them moving despite that.

I’m having a better time with Supernatural than Lost.  Lost is just difficult.  It’s like having a child that’s just learning to speak.  A bunch of things are being said, and it doesn’t sound like there’s any meaning to it, but you know that there’s a concept being put forward that you can’t decipher.  There’s time travel and polar bears and statues and smoke monsters and pirate ships and dynamite and alternate timelines and giant magnets and illegal drugs.  Put it together, and you have an aneurysm.  Supernatural doesn’t have that harshness of understanding.  There are a couple of guys who have been told that they will host the spirits of Michael and Lucifer in their bodies so that they may fight to the death.  That’s the extent of it.  We know what’s coming, the mystery is just in how it happens, and that’s what’s keeping me coming back week after week.

It’s still just amazing to think that the show airs on CW.  It’s like a nice little diamond surrounded by garbage.  Imagine how much more it would stand out if you were to put it on MTV, which is like a mountain of crap compared to CW’s molehill.  Gotta get my shots in when I can, folks!
