We Prefer Intentional Community

Self sustaining cult-like communes are quite creepy. A line from an early review I saw about Wanderlust said if you see “Martha Marcy May Marlene” before you see Wanderlust it’s not very funny. Well, I’ve seen Martha Marcy May Marlene, and whoever said that is an asshole.

Wanderlust is about George (Paul Rudd) and Linda (Jennifer Aniston). They live in New York, have just bought a small apartment, and are banking on George’s upcoming bonus and Linda’s documentary getting picked up by HBO.

Neither of those things happen. Linda’s movie is declined and George loses his job. This forces the couple to leave New York and live with George’s asshole brother (Ken Marino) in Atlanta. On the way they stumble upon a community of hippies that they get along with very well (Elysium) , and after a short while at George’s brother’s decide to try living with the hippies at Elysium instead.

  • I expected this to be funny. But, I didn’t expect it to be as funny as it was. Maybe I was worried about the whole Jennifer Aniston thing, or the produced by Judd Apatow thing, but they didn’t adversely affect the movie at all.
  • The cast was great. It featured some State members like Ken Marino, Joe Lo Truglio, and Kerri Kenney-Silver. And those people are almost always funny. Like I said previously, Jennifer Aniston wasn’t bad, she was actually funny. Paul Rudd was great as usual. This is the best thing I can remember seeing Justin Theroux in as well.

  • The plot that endangered Elysium was a little wonky. This was more of the story of George and Linda. While I think this had to be included it just seemed kind of silly.

Wanderlust doesn’t have the best story, but that just seems to be how David Wain does it. He resolved everything in Role Models by having a giant LARP fight with the characters dressed as Kiss. Wanderlust is silly like that, but the laughs more than make up for it not making great sense.

The big question is probably is it better than Role Models? No, it’s not, but it’s still very good. If you’re a fan of comedy or anything Wain’s done before you need to see Wanderlust.
