People We Admire – Marie Curie & Rosalind Franklin

Marie Curie Rosalind Franklin

The past couple of weeks I’ve let myself slide with the People We Admire feature. Today I am attempting to redeem myself with a double dose of female scientist…to admire. Both of these women have been dead for over 50 years, but that doesn’t mean you can’t admire them.  People still admire Jesus.

First up we have Marie Curie.  She was a chemist and physicist.  If I’m not mistaken she was the first woman to win the Nobel prize and was the first person to win two. She discovered the elements radium and polonium and led the first studies of the effects of radiation on cancer cells.  She unfortunately/ironically died of leukemia which is thought to be from radiation exposure.

And second…I feel bad for putting her second since she was dissed by the scientific community in her time, is Rosalind Franklin.  As I said in her time she was treated lesser than the men in her field.  She is now credited with the discovery of the helical structure of DNA.  Francis Crick himself admitted that her findings led to he and James Watson’s theory on the structure of DNA.

There you go, two women in science that you should never forget and we owe a lot of thanks to for their contributions.
