I promise to try to keep this short and sweet. There has yet to be a musician as a person we admire. When trying to come up with someone I gravitated toward Dave Grohl. He has had such an amazing career, that I don’t think is anywhere near over.
Just like most musicians his first few bands weren’t that big. But, coming up in the time frame and scene he did he ended up befriending The Melvin’s Buzz Osborne, who introduced him to and helped him land a try-out with Nirvana. He obviously got the gig, and then the amazing career really began.
After the death of Kurt Cobain Grohl was offered a full-time job as the drummer for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, but declined it in order to focus on his own material. That’s how Foo Fighters were born. He wrote and recorded all of the first album himself. He then recruited a band and they have gone on to record and release five more studio albums since then (with a few member changes in between).
Aside from his work in Nirvana and Foo Fighters Dave Grohl seems to just love music and making it with his friends. He played drums on Queens of the Stone Age’s Songs for the Deaf, Nine Inch Nails’ album With Teeth, Tenacious D’s albums, as well as guest spots on other friends albums. He gathered a bunch of his childhood metal singer heroes to record an album as Probot. And last, but definitely not least, he recently released an album with Josh Homme from QOTSA and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin under the name Them Crooked Vultures.
It certainly doesn’t seem like he’s going to be slowing down anytime soon, and I like the sound of that.
