Richard Ayoade might not be too familiar to many people in the United States. Well, that’s unless you watch a lot of Adult Swim or like to get your British comedy from IFC. Well, you should get to know him and his work a little better. I’m honestly not too familiar with his Britain-only work, but let’s take a look at what he’s done that most Americans might have seen.
As a writer/actor he’s worked on the hilarious Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, a 2004 horror-spoof show that recently aired on Adult Swim. Ayoade played Dean Learner, the “publisher” of Marenghi’s novels who plays the manager of the hospital in a show they made together. He was also featured in and acted as script editor for some episodes of The Mighty Boosh. He was originally supposed to play Dixon Bainbridge, the zoo owner in the first season, but had to back out due to a contract with a rival channel. And the role he’s most famous for is playing Maurice Moss(pictured above) in the always hilarious The IT Crowd(which is currently available to stream on Netflix).
As a director he was in charge of the entire six-episode run of Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, and a spin-off series called Man to Man with Dean Learner, where he also reprises his role as Dean Learner. He has directed music videos for Arctic Monkeys, Super Furry Animals, The Last Shadow Puppets, Vampire Weekend, and Kasabian(including the video posted for music video of the week). Most recently he wrote(adapted from a book) and directed a movie called Submarine, which is currently listed as in post-production.
