MGMT is essentially two guys that met in college who ended up writing music together. The two main members write all of the songs, but they tour as a 5-piece band. Congratulations is their second full-length album, both being on Columbia Records, and was released April 13th. It was recorded in California and produced by Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3
YAY :
- MGMT is a very fun and playful sounding band, they remind me of other bands that I would classify as ‘fun’, like Supergrass & Belle and Sebastian (sometimes).
- I remember reading somewhere that they wanted this to be more of an album than a collection of singles, and they did a great job of that. These songs flow together really well.
- “Siberian Breaks”, which is unfortunately not available to stream, is like three songs in one(sequentially, not at the same time), but they all work and it’s very very good.
NAY :
- It can be a little boring, “I Found a Whistle” almost put me to sleep. These are rare moments though.
- At times it sounds a little too much like some other bands of the genre.
Congratulations is a great pop/psych-pop album. Before I listened to MGMT I thought it was going to be the usual hype-machine garbage that magazines like NME praise undeservedly, but I was pleasantly surprised. Congratulations deserves a listen, and if you like ‘fun’ pop bands like the ones I mentioned earlier there’s a really good chance you’ll like this too.
Album Highlights : “It’s Working” , “Flash Delirium” , “Siberian Breaks” & “Brian Eno”
