Massive Attack – Heligoland
- This album keeps the tradition alive of getting some great guest vocalists to appear on their tracks (I don’t really think this will ever not be the case). The best guest spot has to be the opening track with Tunde Adebimpe from TV on the Radio.
- While the guest vocals are mostly great, the two songs that are sang by 3D (one of the members) are two of the better songs on the album.
- I used to have this crazy idea that if Massive Attack did a song with the singer from Elbow(Guy Garvey) that it would be great. Well, it was far from great. The collaboration is easily the worst song on the album. And to make matters worse it’s right in the middle, almost taking away all goodwill already built up.
- The song with Damon Albarn from Blur/Gorillaz isn’t that much better. Actually, wait, it’s way better, but it’s still not that good.
Heligoland is a good album. I’m really not sure if it’s going to create many new fans for Massive Attack, and it doesn’t really stack up to some of their past albums, especially Mezzanine. If you’ve ever been in an argument about the superiority of the two groups who are most popular in the ‘trip-hop’ genre and sided against Portishead, don’t use the latest albums by the two groups as an example, because Portishead’s was better. I would put “Pray for Rain” and “Atlas Air” on a list of the best Massive Attack songs of all time though.
Album Highlights : “Pray For Rain (ft. Tunde Adebimpe)” , “Psyche (ft. Martina Topley-Bird)” , “Rush Minute” & “Atlas Air”
