Kratos is Pissed, Of Course

About a month ago I played all three of the console God of War games(I played the PSP game about a year ago). So, when I found out a God of War comic was coming out, it was exciting to hear, and a couple weeks ago I made it one of my picks for comics to check out that week.  How good of a decision was that? Spoilers Ahoy!

This issue deals with Kratos on a quest for the Ambrosia of Asclepius after the events of the first game.  He sees a young minotaur and it takes him on a flashback to his early life leading up to the birth of his daughter when he had to go on the same journey to save her from being killed by Spartan law(casting sickly children off of a cliff).

You later find out that Ares made his daughter sick so he would have to seek out the Ambrosia.  He and Hades are making a bet where they each choose a warrior and see whose choice is superior.  In order for their choices to meet Hades makes the father of his warrior sick to near death so he will also have to seek the Ambrosia.

All of the gods are in on this game and each have chosen their own warrior to represent them.

The issue ends where it started with Kratos seeking the Ambrosia of Asclepius for a seemingly second time.

YAY :

  • The part where the gods are each betting on a warrior that is going to have to face another is the most interesting part of the storyline. I hope they continue with that, even if it was part of an odd flashback.
  • The art style is pretty unique and interesting to look at.  (Example at the bottom of this review)

NAY :

  • The first half of the flashback reads a lot like 300. Except 300 is way better. It’s so similar to 300 it shows a frame where Kratos, as a young man, is surrounded by wolves with red eyes.
  • The story is confusing. He’s looking for the Ambrosia of Asclepius  again just like he did for his daughter, but why is he looking for it again? And why can’t they just finish the flashback before going back to the ‘present time’ in the story?

The first issue of God of War isn’t a bad read, but it’s not great enough to attract people who aren’t already fans of the video game series.  If you are a fan of God of War check this out, if only to get further into the back story of Ares controlling the life of Kratos to get whatever he wants from him.
