Oh my God look at the face the Lizard is making.
There’s a lot going on in this promo for the new year of Spider-Man, which has been declared by Marvel as being a big Spidey year. Right off the bat the promo would seem to indicate that things might be changing in terms of what happened in One More Day, a Spider-Man story hated more than the entirety of the Clone Saga. Judging by the fact that the image came out in increments, set up as sections of a puzzle, I’d like to think that the puzzle pieces are Spider-Man’s memories being reformed. However, I’d say Mary Jane in a wedding dress is a red herring. And she’s wearing white? Really? She’s not fooling anyone.
So let’s take a look at what we see in this image. There’s Madame Web, Araña, Scarlet Spider, and… Venom? Or maybe it’s just black costume Spidey. After Dark Avengers it’s gotten hard to tell. But anyway, the four of them seem to be hanging out and looking at something. Something that calls for the entire Spider-Man Family to convene. Next we have a baby about to be, I don’t know, let’s say eaten by Doctor Octopus. It has green eyes, so it could be a Green Goblin baby. But I refuse to ignore the possibility that it’s a Spider-Baby. The only thing working against that is the fact that One More Day was done for the sake of keeping Peter Parker youthful (single). I don’t think giving him a child would help them. Although I would love to see Spider-Man as a single dad. That might work out amazingly.
Let’s see… Peter kissing a redhead with glasses. MJ? Not MJ? I don’t know, it could be anyone. After that OH MY GOD LOOK AT THE FACE THE LIZARD IS MAKING. I’m serious, he looks like a prehistoric eel. I don’t know what part he has to play, but it could easily be that of “aquarium fish”. Apparently following that is some female version of Kraven, and what would seem to be Spider-Man and Juggernaut as drinking buddies. I’m sure these are all little things that will pile up into a big story for Peter, but God knows what they can come to form.
Look, I love Spider-Man, but the thing is, when they try to do big continuity-changing stories with Spider-Man, they fail. They fail so hard. On the level of the Hypno-Hustler. So I hope that if this is in fact a continuity change it’s for a return to Spider-Man’s former married life. I don’t dare push the issue though, as we have seen that things can always, always get worse. It’s what Spider-Man himself refers to as “The Parker Luck”, wherein little wins are overwhelmed by colossal disaster. It’s something the fans have had to contend with for a long time.
