Face Off – Pirate Treasure

It’s episode 2 and there was a rather large BONUS on the line. It was a pirate themed challenge and the winner of this challenge won an extra $5,000. The loser got to return to their own home.

They traveled from LA down to San Diego to visit a pirate ship and were then told to create a pirate character that has become one with the sea. They were basically tasked with creating characters from The Flying Dutchman in the Pirates of the Caribbean films. The twist was that they had to incorporate an element that’s unique to each contestant.

If you didn’t realize from last week these rundowns are in order from what I disliked the most to what I liked the most.

Let’s start with the bad.

The Bad :

CC- Barnacles - It was bad. It was quite bad. The edges were awful, and the paint was super bland. CC has an apparent knack for using terrible wigs. Also, the costume was just not good. He looked like a bad Star Trek character. CC deservedly went home for this make-up. Hopefully the show doesn’t have ridiculous fans claim racism because they eliminated the only black contestant.

*

Jason – Jewels - I love octopus, but this guy just looked weird. He  looked like a greasy guy holding jewels with an octopus on his shoulder. I also didn’t like the octopus. He even had a terrible gold chain. Was that supposed to be part of the jewels? Oh wait, there were barely any jewels in this.

*

Eric – Spyglass - It looked very cheesy horror movie. The eye was a really bad touch. He liked the paint job on the eyeball? Really?! A bloodshot eye is what you’re going to get behind? Why did the spyglass have a terrible looking wire sticking out of the back of it? Pirates existed before that technology. This looked bad AND didn’t make sense. Other than the cyborg eye this is a solid Osama Bin Laden costume.

*

Alana – Crabs - She was still a mess this episode. It looked more like a dinosaur than a crab. The parts where the facial prosthetic overlapped the head piece did not look good at all. The crab claw was pretty sloppy too. She was lucky other people like Eric, Jason, and CC were there to save her from being thrashed for this.

*

Derek – Netting - The props/fabrications were decent, but other than that I did not dig this. The paint on the face was bland, and the paint on the octopus was horrible. He and his brother showed promise in the first foundation challenge where no one else really excelled, but since then they have not done well at all.

*

Nicole – Ship in a Bottle - I feel like the front and rear portions of the mast didn’t line up. The face sculpt wasn’t bad, but some poor choices were made. Like that beard and the hair. They didn’t match. Different colors and hair types. The beard is also a cheap way to hide a lot of face, honestly.

*

Tommy – Kelp - It wasn’t that bad. That’s probably the nicest thing I can say about it. I don’t really have much bad to say though. I just didn’t like it that much. The starfish on the head looked weird and the torso was strange. It wasn’t necessarily bad, just “what’s going on there?”

*

The Good :

Sarah – Sea Urchins - I liked the glitter effect in her make-up and the costume was really good. I didn’t love this though. It didn’t grab me like the others I did like. The purposely rough parts took away from it. Sarah won for this, which was nice because her and Laura deserved to win the first episode, but I still think someone else should have won.

*

Rod – Sea Horse - Rod fought through a hand injury, which was milked really hard during the episode. I really dug the seahorse. I think his color choices were great and his paint was solid. I liked this more than the make-up he won for in the previous week. There was a slight disconnect with the bottom of the face and the top of the chest piece though.

*

Roy – Dagger - Roy actually made a place where she could pull daggers out of the make-up. Roy is a damn genius. She had a sea anemone on her head! This was very impressive. The head piece wasn’t blended into the face as well as it could have been, but as he’s shown us, Roy is a conceptual dynamo.

*

Laura – Shells - It was an awesome moment when the model moved the front of the make-up. There was a lot going on, which was nice. The level of detail was so fantastic. I don’t think I have anything bad to say about this. Laura is my Rayce(personal favorite that I hope wins) for this season so far. Laura was robbed for a second week in a row.
