I Will Be is Dum Dum Girls first full-length album. It’s a fairly lo-fi non-studio recording, but you can tell that they wanted it that way. It was released on Sub Pop March 30th.
YAY :
- There’s a big 60′s girl group influence going on here, and it’s great. The majority of the songs are catchy and fun, and dare I say ‘jangly’ at times. It reminds me of Vivian Girls. A less lo-fi, more listenable version of Vivian Girls.
- It has a nice flow to it and is quick, without leaving you feeling cheated by its length. If you put this in a CD player (what’s that? you say) and have it on ‘repeat disc’ you’ll probably listen to the whole album a few times without caring to change it.
NAY :
- It most likely comes with the territory of this genre of music, but some of the songs sound very similar. A lot of it has to do with the drums. It’s not even that the time signature is the same, it just seems like a lot of the songs are the same beats-per-minute/tempo. You shouldn’t knock a band for a singular element like this on their first album, because look at how awesome The White Stripes are, but they just could have used more fills and varied tempos to make it sound more varied.
Even though some of the songs have a similar feel/tempo this is a very good album. If you like 60′s girl groups like some of the stuff Phil Spector produced, or female bands like the Vivian Girls you’ll probably dig this.
