Daughters is a Mathcore band from Providence that has been around since 2001. This, their third album, was released March 9th on Hydra Head Records.
They’re are a little more chaotic then most people are probably used to. The label of Mathcore that a lot of people give them basically means they’re a metal band(metalcore, the ‘core’ part) that often uses weird time signatures (the ‘math’ part), so the songs also tend to not follow basic song structure. Their guitar player and bass player supposedly left before this album was released, so this might be the last by Daughters.
YAY :
- The riffs are pretty good/crazy and give some of the songs a bad-ass feel.
NAY :
- The vocalist kind of just talks over the music, and when he does more and tries to sing his voice gets annoying fast.
- Even though the music has a chaotic nature to it, a lot of the songs somehow end up sounding similar.
- If you’re not used to music like this it could give you a headache pretty quickly.
There are a lot of good parts on this album, but they’re unfortunately pretty segmented. The crazy tends to outweigh the awesome. If someone were to tell you “Daughters is math-rock/ math-metal band, you should check them out“, and you got excited because you like bands like Don Caballero and Dillinger Escape Plan, I’d say give this is a listen first, because it’s very different. I’m pretty sure I wont be listening to it again.
I’m sorry this review had to go down like this, I really am. I often like music like this, but I just didn’t feel it with this album.
If you want to check it out for yourself and see if you agree here you go.
