Here we are living in a world where Modern Warfare 2 is out for the masses to consume. As everyone knows, the game has broken the record for biggest entertainment launch, which means that there is a crazy amount of people playing right now. The only question that remains is why haven’t you joined them? Read the rest of this entry »

The first Marvel: Ultimate Alliance game was pretty awesome. It was one of the greatest Marvel beat’em ups ever released and it wrought pure ethereal fanboy joy whenever you played the game with three of your friends on the couch. Overall, Ultimate Alliance 2 keeps the same game mechanics from the first game, but it just doesn’t quite give the players a better or even equal playing experience. Certainly the new addition of fusion powers (combining 2 heroes powers together for double the damage) is cool initially, but there are many clones that ruin the awe of possibilities when you play through the tutorial stage. In fact, that’s a way to describe the progression of the game. As the game goes on, there is less and less to expect from it which culminates in a pretty mundane feeling as you complete it. Ahem.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is one of the best single player campaigns since Metal Gear Solid in 1998. It’s that game changing. The team at Naughty Dog are true artists who know and love their medium. Literally every moment in Uncharted (minus one sequence but more on that later) is programmed, polished, and written fantastically by the game’s creators. It is almost a shame that this game is an exclusive to the PS3 as every gamer needs to experience it as a whole. Trust me, going to a friend’s house and playing a part of Uncharted 2 is simply not enough to say you have played the game. No one person can play this game (regardless of your console allegiance) and find an immediate resistance to continue through Nathan Drake’s adventure. Read the rest of this entry »
Brutal Legend is the newest game by Tim Schafer’s Double Fine. A lot of the hype regarding Brutal Legend was due to it being made by Double Fine, the involvement of Jack Black, and the games (awesome) metal soundtrack.
You play as Eddie Riggs (Jack Black), a roadie for a band that has to be a joke on Linkin Park. After an accident feeds blood into the mouth of your belt buckle, you get transported back in time to the land of metal.
For the first hour or so the game is a pretty basic and fun hack n’ slash adventure through the landscape. Once you begin to free the lands youth, the real-time strategy(RTS) aspects of the gameplay take the main stage. The rest of the game plays out with RTS battles against the opposing forces until the game culminates in a final battle that feels the same as most other battles you’ve already experienced.
Dirt 2 is the latest in the Dirt franchise from Codemasters. It’s also known as Colin McRae’s Dirt 2 in Europe and this is the first Colin McRae game since his death in a helicopter crash in 2007. They had some big expectations to meet using the name of who was probably the most well-known rally driver worldwide. Did Codemasters succeed?

It has almost been a week since Batman Arkham Asylum has been released and hype has taken over this game. Guinness has dubbed it the best reviewed superhero game of all time and the game’s Metacritic score is very generous. Being that I consider myself a die hard fan of both Batman and stealth action games, if this game can please me then it has to be awesome. So does the game meet the credentials as the best Batman game of all time or does it fall into the same abyss that George Clooney’s bat-nipples were banished to by millions of bat-fans? Metroidvania. There, I said it. That’s the only time I’m ever going to say that though. 2D games on the consoles are somewhat of a rarity these days. Even 2D platforming legends, Sonic and Mario, have made the leap to 3D. A good side-scrolling game is good for the soul if done right. Look at Little Big Planet, Bionic Commando: Rearmed, and Muramasa: The Demon Blade for recent examples. Well, you can now add Shadow Complex to that list.
Shadow Complex was released August 19th as a download-only game on Xbox 360′s Live service. It’s about a character named Jason Fleming, voiced by Nolan North, who goes hiking with girlfriend Claire somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. Claire gets kidnapped by some sort of military organization and Jason has to rescue her, which is standard fare. This game has gotten a lot of hype before and since it’s release. Is it worthy of the hype, or should you save your MS points?

A few weeks ago, before Xbox Live’s “Summer of Arcade” started I was rather sure of the games I wanted out of the bunch. I was definitely going to get ‘Splosion Man, Turtles in Time, and Shadow Complex. I was planning on getting Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on the PS3 and I had no interest in Trials HD. My plan has changed a bit as the “Summer of Arcade” has progressed. I didn’t end up getting ‘Splosion Man, I got Turtles in Time and was a little disappointed by it, and Shadow Complex comes out this coming Wednesday. The other change in my plan was my status on Trials HD. I didn’t really care about a motorcycle tricks game. I thought it looked like a mix between Pain and Excite Bike (I don’t know why). But, then a magical thing happened, I tried the trial version of Trials HD. I thought it was easy to pick up and really fun. Within five minutes of riding the available tracks in the trial I was on Amazon.com buying an unlock code.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) are near and dear to the hearts of so many people in my age group. When I was a kid I had everything branded TMNT, from backpacks to bedsheets. It should come as no surprise that a few TMNT video games were made. Many people consider the best Turtles game made to be TMNT IV: Turtles in Time for the Arcade, which was later ported to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Recently Ubisoft Singapore took this classic co-op beat-em-up and gave it a fresh new look. It was released on Xbox Live as TMNT: Turtles in Time Re-shelled. Should you shell out the cash for a fresh look? Or should you just dust off the old SNES?
