Never Not A Nerd

This is going to be a new ‘special’ 2010-only feature where for every week of the year we’re going to recommend a movie that we feel was one of the best of the last decade (2000-2009).  So,  this is essentially going to end up being a list of around 50 of our favorite movies from that time period. Just so you know, they might not all be posted on their own week, so don’t be too worried if you think we missed a week. You’ll get your 50-ish movies.

Sin City is a great movie.  Instantly, one of the main draws about the film has to be the visual style.  It was one of the first to be shot primarily on green-screen and has been heavily imitated since (I’m looking at you 300). It may not please people who don’t like segmented stories, but it deals with different books in Frank Miller’s graphic novel series, so give it a shot. Directed by Robert Rodriguez & Frank Miller, it lead to Robert Rodriguez’s separation from the Director’s Guild of America over disputes about crediting Frank Miller as co-director.

New Zealand company Weta Ltd. semi-recently released two weapon replicas from Neill Blomkamp’s Oscar-nominated film District 9. The two weapons are the Arc Generator and the Gas Projector. I don’t really remember the Gas Projector too well from the film, but I’m pretty sure the Arc Generator is the one that just made people into ‘human sauce’. Kind of like Dr. Manhattan did in Watchmen. The Gas Projector is the above picture, the Arc Generator is below the cut.

Good Lord… he’s in three dimensions.  THREE OF THEM.

UGO has dredged up the first image of a Smurf from the upcoming (whenever that refers to) Smurfs movie.  And I couldn’t be more Smurfy about it.  I guess it’s just weird to see the clothing look like actual fabric, even kind of dirty and with seams.  But considering there’s not much else to talk about beyond the fact that there’s a Smurf of indeterminate color in this image, I suppose we can talk about other things

The trailer for Alexandre Aja’s (director of High Tension, the Hills Have Eyes(2006), and Mirrors) newest film just hit the internet sometime yesterday.  It’s called Piranha 3D and it will be about prehistoric piranhas, that were released by an underwater tremor, eating people in a lake. Awesome premise there guys.  Sounds like a mix between Megashark vs. Giant Octopus and that other movie about piranhas. Oh yeah, 1978′s Piranha, which was a Jaw’s rip-off. Is this a remake? And why the hell is Richard Dreyfuss, star of Jaws, in a remake of a Jaws rip-off? Does he need the money that bad? Trailer after the cut.

Mark Millar, creator of Wanted, Kick-Ass, and the yet to be released Nemesis is already talking about a Nemesis movie. On his website MillarWorld.tv message boards he drunkenly says he has been talking to a director that threw out the names Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis as potential stars. The unnamed director is supposedly friends with one of the mentioned actors.

The above is a direct-quote taken from someone named Tim commenting on Andrew’s review of G.I. Joe. That’s a funny joke isn’t it?

Well, it’s not a joke anymore. Less than 6 months after saying it, Tim’s jokingly said wish is coming true because Channing Tatum has publicly said he wants to make a stripper movie. As Tim said Tatum was a stripper before some asshole somewhere decided to let him try to ‘act’.

“It needs to be a crazy film and I also think it’s possible to do a cute, romantic movie” – Channing Tatum

I don’t know what kind of stuff this guy is on, but it must be FANTASTIC.

Are women really into this idea? Would it be the male stripper version of Pretty Woman?

…MacGruber!!! The red band trailer for the movie version of this SNL MacGyver spoof surfaced on the internet yesterday and I wanted to share it with all of you. It seems like it could be a pretty funny movie. I definitely think the R rating will help it.

Well, no matter how pissed off ultra-conservatives (the ‘message’) or Italian mothers (its Italian rating) get about Avatar it seems to still be raking in the dough.  After this weekends box-office take, the worldwide totals for Avatar are now at 1.64 Billion dollars, which is only 200 million behind the worldwide record currently held by Titanic at 1.84 Billion.  Avatar has also just beaten the record held by The Dark Knight for fastest to 500 Million domestic by doing it in 32 days, 13 days faster than The Dark Knight.
