Ray Bradbury

Posted by Joe Sherry On June - 6 - 2012

I write about the passing of Ray Bradbury with a heavy heart. Good journalism usually begins with keeping a respectful distance from your subject, in an effort to stay objective and report faithfully; in discussing Mr. Bradbury and his work, I find that to be an impossible task. The very nature of his writing was designed to engage the reader through beautifully worded phrases, vivid sensory description, and empathy to the human condition. Ray’s stories were personal even when they were larger than life, and they were never free of emotion and passion. To try and report on such a writer by keeping him at arm’s length would be insincere, and I can say with no hyperbole that Ray Bradbury was my hero.

My love for Ray Bradbury was ignited by Fahrenheit 451. I had already been a prolific young reader, and the concept of a world without books was a nightmare worse than the horrors unleashed by more the more traditional monsters I had read about in other genre fiction. I wasted little time in exploring more of Bradbury’s work, devouring Something Wicked This Way Comes(still my personal favorite) and the Illustrated Man. My local library possessed a copy of Zen in the Art of Writing, Bradbury’s celebration on the art of writing and the joys it brought to his own life. I had previously had no desire to be a storyteller, but the intensity of Bradbury’s passion lit a fire in me, and made me realize that I had stories of my own to tell. Writing remains an important part of my life, and is just one of the many gifts that Ray has given to me between the covers of his books.

I could go through his stories one by one, singing the praises of my favorite tales and telling you which to read(really all of them, but don’t miss The Emmisary!), but it would be a waste of words. Instead I will recount, without doing it justice, my favorite of Bradbury’s anecdotes about his own life: At the age of 12 Ray attended a carnival where he encountered a sideshow performer by the name of Mr. Electrico. Mr. Electrico sat in an electric chair and tapped young Ray on his shoulders and nose while proclaiming “Live forever!”. I had always believed and hoped as Ray crawled up in age that these words were in fact a prophecy, and that we would never lose a living legend. The news of his death disappointed me: Ray would never write again, and Mr. Electrico was just a phony sideshow performer.; afterall, we lost Ray. But as I reopened my own dog eared copies of Ray’s work and started to reread some of my favorite stories to comfort myself, I felt him, alive between the pages, crackling with imagination. In his stories, and the people he inspired, Mr. Electrico’s declaration was in fact, on the nose: Live forever, Ray Bradbury. Live forever.

People We Admire – Richard Ayoade

Posted by Jamie Concepcion On June - 10 - 2010

Richard Ayoade might not be too familiar to many people in the United States. Well, that’s unless you watch a lot of Adult Swim or like to get your British comedy from IFC. Well, you should get to know him and his work a little better. I’m honestly not too familiar with his Britain-only work, but let’s take a look at what he’s done that most Americans might have seen.

People We Admire – Alex Garland

Posted by Andrew Witts On May - 28 - 2010

With the exception of 2008′s Slumdog Millionaire, Alex Garland is pretty much the secondary reason why Danny Boyle’s filmography for the past decade kicked so much ass. The Beach, 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later (Boyle directed the opening cabin sequence),  and the unbelievably underrated Sunshine are all products spilled from this Brit’s noggin. Oh and by the way, he also wrote the script to the Halo movie that was reviewed many times as being complete awesome sauce (and was supposed to be directed by helmer of District 9, Neill Blomkamp) before the suits at Fox started hiring terrible writers to defile it over and over again until it ended up sucking royally, but never mind about that! Read on to find out why Mr. Garland just truck-sticks everyone!

People We Admire – Dave Grohl

Posted by Jamie Concepcion On May - 13 - 2010

I promise to try to keep this short and sweet. There has yet to be a musician as a person we admire. When trying to come up with someone I gravitated toward Dave Grohl. He has had such an amazing career, that I don’t think is anywhere near over.

Just like most musicians his first few bands weren’t that big. But, coming up in the time frame and scene he did he ended up befriending The Melvin’s Buzz Osborne, who introduced him to and helped him land a try-out with Nirvana. He obviously got the gig, and then the amazing career really began.

People We Admire – Michio Kaku

Posted by Jamie Concepcion On April - 29 - 2010

Dr. Michio Kaku is someone I’d refer to as a super-scientist.  He has a few TV shows (one of which is currently developing a second season), has written or co-written eleven books, hosts two weekly radio shows, and has appeared in many documentaries.  He was recently interviewed about the volcanic eruption in Iceland (he’s not even a Volcanologist)  and will be appearing on Larry King Live tomorrow night- April 30th,(which I didn’t know when I started writing this) to talk about the special where Stephen Hawking said extraterrestrials most likely exist, but we don’t necessarily want to meet them.

People We Admire – Cheech and Chong

Posted by Dillon St. Jean On April - 20 - 2010

Richard “Cheech” Marin and Tommy Chong are names that have become bigger than the duo themselves.  Household names for smoking it up and getting into crazy predicaments, not since Shaggy and Scooby have there been such trouble-making stoners (yeah, they were stoners, understand that) getting trapped in a serious pickle.  Dozens of movies and comedy sketches have put these two over the top in terms of hilarity, and rightfully so.  Therefore, let’s take a look at the work these gentlemen have done.

People We Admire – Patton Oswalt

Posted by Jamie Concepcion On April - 15 - 2010

I can’t believe I haven’t done a People We Admire on Patton Oswalt yet !! Believe it or not(why wouldn’t you though?) a blog post Patton wrote on his Myspace page about TV shows he enjoys was actually one of the things that inspired me to start this amazing blog. It’s time for me to repay him by confessing my great and completely heterosexual man-love.

People We Admire – James Jean

Posted by Dillon St. Jean On April - 2 - 2010

Taking a look at James Jean today, one of my favorite artists.  He has done the covers to Fables and the first issue of The Umbrella Academy.  He has done posters, prints, and advertisements.  He’s done covers to novels and all sorts of paintings.  God, he just does such amazing, surreal works of art.  In his work you can identify such a fluid understanding of how things flow and how things interact.  Graceful human figures and well balanced placement of all elements works quite well in his work.  So instead of spending too much time trying to describe his colorful masterpieces, I think I’ll just show you some of them.

People We Admire – Terrence “T.C.” Carson

Posted by Jamie Concepcion On March - 12 - 2010

This is probably going to be one of the shorter People We Admire’s, but it’s relevant.  Terrence “T.C.” Carson may not be a name known by too many people, but for video game and Star Wars fans, you’ve seen, or should I say heard his work before.  He’s had some film and television roles in the past, the one that sticks out most in my mind is Final Destination 2, but he is without a doubt the star of the God of War franchise.  He has voiced Kratos in every iteration of the game to date, and if they decide to continue making games in the God of War universe I have no doubt he’ll continue to voice the angry Spartan.  He has also voiced the Jedi Mace Windu (no, I didn’t plan to feature him right after Samuel L. Jackson) in most of the video games he has appeared in as well as the Star Wars: Clone Wars series airing on Cartoon Network.

I’d bet that a lot of people are going to be picking up God of War III this coming Tuesday, or even at midnight that night. And  If you didn’t know who was behind that powerful angry voice of Kratos, now you do.

People We Admire – Samuel L. Jackson

Posted by Jamie Concepcion On February - 25 - 2010

Samuel Leroy Jackson is a BAMF.  For example, his middle name is Leroy . Not enough? OK, Jackson has also been an extremely prolific actor and overtook Harrison Ford as the highest-grossing movie star of all time.
