Today everyone seems a bit peeved with Armond White of the New York Press for this review he wrote of Toy Story 3 claiming that the film was nothing more than a cheap attempt at consumerism, saying that the fans had basically been duped into believing this movie was worth it.  Unfortunately for Armond White, he is wrong.  He is so wrong.  Wrong wrong wrong.  Wrong.  Never mind how he’s ignoring the amount of time, work, and patience it took to get to this point, never mind how good the script is and how much it works to satisfy those who have had faith in Pixar all along, and never mind the fact that it was the perfect cap on a series I’ve been enjoying since I was about seven years old.  Never mind all of that.  As soon as the name Barbie is uttered once, it becomes a colossal advertisement.  The amount that is wrong with that is mind-boggling.

The Smurfs.  In New York City.  Which is pretty much bullsmurf, but I suppose I can deal with it.  It’s not like I planned on seeing this anyway, it’s just that I don’t get why you would need to bother taking them out of the woods.  Is it because they’re so desperate to distance comparisons being made with James Cameron’s Avatar?  Or is it just because living in the woods severely reduces the Smurfs’ chance of being introduced to hip-hop and having Papa Smurf bust mad rhymes?  I’ll be surprised if they don’t ‘Sex and the City’ out Smurfette for the movie.  Come on, you know they’ll do something that doesn’t fit at all with the Smurfs just to make it seem hip and current with today’s trends.  But comes on.  They’re little blue people.  If anything screams 2010 it’s that.

A New Aqualad and Young Justice Animated

Posted by Dillon St. Jean On June - 11 - 2010

What I find most interesting about the new Aqualad is the costume.  Reminiscent of the original’s and still carries enough new features for the new character.  Although to be fair, it’s not a ‘new’ character.  DC doesn’t really make any ‘new’ characters unless they’re Batman villains.  For DC, new characters come from other companies they purchase.  But putting that aside, Brightest Day #4 will debut the new Aqualad, and the only thing it’s making me wonder about is whether or not it can do anything – literally, anything at all – to help get the Teen Titans back on track.

Iron Man is Getting Some Interesting Covers

Posted by Jamie Concepcion On June - 10 - 2010

Variant covers that is. Throughout this month certain Iron Man releases, and one Avengers book, are getting variant covers by guest artists. They’re calling the variants Design 2.0. The above image is my personal favorite and was done by Pixar story-board artist Bill Pressing.  The cover is depicting WWII era Iron Man and will go on sale June 23rd. Keep reading to see the other three.

Rango – Announcement Trailer Time

Posted by Jamie Concepcion On June - 9 - 2010

This teaser trailer is a little weird. It’s actually, according to Paramount, not even a teaser trailer. It’s an ‘announcement event’. OK? This film is directed by Gore Verbinski and starring Johnny Depp, their first project together since Pirates of the Caribbean. The only info anyone has on the plot is that it’s the story of a chameleon with an identity crisis.

80′s Renaissance – Voltron

Posted by Jamie Concepcion On June - 8 - 2010

Voltron is coming back. The rights holders, World Events Productions & Classic Media have announced a deal with Mattel and Nickelodeon to produce both  a show and a new toy line.

The show will be called Voltron Force and NickToons will air 26 half-hour episodes sometime next year.

After the Thundercats news last week I wonder if a new He-Man show is on its way. Maybe it is and I just don’t know.

You can stream the first two seasons of Voltron in their entirety (104 episodes) via Netflix.

Lion-OH DAMN

Posted by Dillon St. Jean On June - 2 - 2010

Aw yeah, it’s the Thundercats, ho!  Finally, after a long period of just sitting around, the Thundercats franchise returns next year with a new show on Cartoon Network.  No, I haven’t fallen prey to delusions that the cartoon will look half as good as the first promo image, but I will in fact allow myself to become blissfully unaware of how bad it could potentially be.  I will remain in the middle, assuming it’ll be a fun cartoon I’ll watch sometimes.  But I want this to be badass so much, you have no idea.  I’m picturing so many potentially good things.  Mainly the idea of the first season ending on a colossal sword fight between Lion-O and Mumm-Ra.  Something involving incredible magic and outstanding combat wherein not even sight beyond sights can help the young leader.

Star Wars Uncut is Coming to a Galaxy Very Very Close

Posted by Jamie Concepcion On April - 13 - 2010

Sometime soon to be a little more precise. The project that tasked fans with recreating 15-second clips of  A New Hope is finished and will be shown at a Danish festival April 19th.  It will also be going to NYC sometime in the near future.

Below the the cut is the trailer for the whole film as well as three clips produced by Malcolm Sutherland. Hopefully all three of his clips will be in the final version of Star Wars uncut because they’re great.

You can check out all the clips submitted for the entire project here. You might need a Vimeo account to view some of them.

Music Video of the Week!! – Grizzly Bear, Part 2

Posted by Jamie Concepcion On April - 7 - 2010

I really loved Veckatimest, it’s my #2 on my favorite albums of last year. If I were to make that list now I’d probably put it at #1. It’s spent more time in my CD player recently(yes, people still own those) than Mastodon has.

Anyway, here is the video for one of the best songs on that album “Ready, Able”. Enjoy!
