Here we are living in a world where Modern Warfare 2 is out for the masses to consume. As everyone knows, the game has broken the record for biggest entertainment launch, which means that there is a crazy amount of people playing right now. The only question that remains is why haven’t you joined them?
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the best first person shooter released this generation, and is probably going to sit on that throne for a long time. Forget Halo, forget Killzone 2, this is the game that you want to play if you enjoy shooting anything. The single player campaign is an experience that is simply exhilarating. Many critics have demoted the game due the “shortness” of the single player campaign itself, but most of them reviewed the game while playing through it on the easiest difficulty “Recruit” and the normal difficulty “Regular”. Plain and simply the game is as long as your skill level dictates it to be. If you’re a veteran hardcore FPS player than you have no excuse but to play the game on Hardened or Veteran. When your skills with a gat are indeed tested, the campaign takes on an additional two hours or more depending on how much you get overwhelmed by the CPU enemy forces. In a nutshell, do not believe all of the comments about this game’s length. When you play through it you will be pleased and most importantly, you will be tested (an aspect of games that is dying out due to dumbed-down gameplay to cater to “main stream”). As for the multiplayer, its one of the most in depth online experiences to be had in gaming. If you avoided that scam job that is Halo 3: ODST and you want a new online FPS, then meet THE current online console FPS.
Modern Warfare is the sequel to 2007′s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and it picks up five years after the events of the first game. As one would come to expect of a Call of Duty game, the player takes control of multiple soldiers during various battle sequences. However, it seems the series has come to adopt a flagship character in the form of Soap MacTavish (the British operative player’s took control of in the previous installment) as he makes a return for the sequel. Essentially, after the events of the last game , there is a new Russian terrorist by the name of Makarov who ignites an all out war against the U.S and it’s awesome.
YAY:
- The pacing of the single player makes Michael Bay films look like Murder She Wrote. In the first 15 minutes you will be running for your life on rooftops in Rio De Janeiro and the next you will be thrown into a sniper mission gone awry in a winter wonderland. Not once will you feel safe while playing the game as hundreds of enemies unload their clips toward you at once.
- The guns once again look, sound, feel, shoot, and aim with perfection. Whether you are holding a massive Javelin missile launcher or a dinky M9, you will love shooting your ammunition into the opposition because the game’s arsenal feels so comfortable.
- Multiplayer is the most addicting aspect to this game, period. The amount of options and unlockables that the player has at their disposal indeed makes every game fresh and new. The perk system is still as complex as ever now that you can level up your favorite perk to a mastery level. The list of challenges in this game and upgradeable equipment will make your head spin and keep you playing for hours and hours on end.
- Special-Ops mode is a very nice addition to the longevity of Modern Warfare’s multiplayer experience. It’s reliance on two-player co-op really allows even the nOObiest person to understand how to cover your teammates back. This is crucial for when you take the game online with the rest of the community. Not to mention the Special-Ops missions are fun as hell and pretty god damn tough.
- Presentation is a big aspect to major holiday titles and Modern Warfare 2 does not disappoint. The character models interact with each other wonderfully and the game’s level design is eerily realistic. I can not tell you how many times I have played the snow level that was demoed at E3 because I could not believe how amazing the entire level looked, and most importantly, played.
NAY:
- Spawning in multiplayer games can be strange in MW2. Sometimes you’ll spawn right next to an enemy taking cover around the corner and other times you can spawn in the campiest places on the map, surrounded by the opposite team. It certainly allows for more players to turtle and be campy nubs, but you’ll be too focused on claiming your next victim to care.
- Shadows sometimes are heavily pixelated and other times disappear for a second. It’s nothing too big but it has its moments of distraction.
What more can I say about Modern Warfare 2. Its the game that gives you exactly what you pay for. For $60, you get three modes of shooting pleasure, the best online console shooting experience, a kick ass campaign, and Co-Op missions. What more could you possibly want? Plain and simple, if you have the money and an XBOX 360 or PS3 then you need to own this game and watch as it consumes your life and ignites an unhealthy addiction. Seems like the criteria for a must-own game huh?
