Family Guy’s Something Something Something Darkside is their version of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. It starts off with a power outage and Peter deciding to tell another Star Wars story (like he did in Blue Harvest). The total run-time is a little less than an hour long and instead of explaining the whole plot, which most people already know, I’m just going to tell you what I thought worked and didn’t work. This review is quite short, so it’ll be a quick read.
YAY:
- This release is straight to DVD, so a few more liberties can be taken with the subject matter and dialogue, and I think they did a pretty good job with it. The swearing can be really hit or miss, but when it hits, it hits hard.
- While Blu-Ray is most likely what they consider to be the ‘lead format’ for this release and that is $19, the DVD is priced at $13 and is a nice change from the $17 or $18 they were originally asking for for Blue Harvest.
NAY:
- Some of the references fall very, very flat. An entire Juicy Fruit commercial? Come on guys! Also, the Imperial Walker jokes about the Crocs and the skinned knee are super lame. Actually, the majority of the Hoth related jokes aren’t that good.
While I’m fairly sure there will be a version of Return of the Jedi, I have to agree with Chris that Robot Chicken has been doing a better job of the Star Wars parodies. I know each of those isn’t based on a single Star Wars movie like this is, but I feel like Robot Chicken uses much better references.
If you saw Blue Harvest and you liked that I’d recommend this to you, you can also get both of the episodes together for $19 on amazon.com. If you’re a big Family Guy fan you’re probably going to get this regardless. If like me, you’re a Star Wars fan, but don’t regularly watch Family Guy I suggest you rent it, the laughs you’ll get are worth four or five bucks.
