Mega Piranha is a low-budget movie made by the ‘mockbuster’ giant The Asylum (the people that made Transmorphers and Snakes on a Train). In Mega Piranha a team of scientists attempted to genetically alter fish in the Orinoco river of Venezuela to be larger thus producing more food for Venezuelan’s. But, the experiment has gone terribly wrong. They thought they killed all the specimen of piranha that were enlarged(why would you want to make a piranha bigger?), but they discover that some got into the Orinoco.
After a school of piranha eat an American diplomat and the boat he is on, a politician in D.C. (played by the Brady Bunch’s Barry Williams) sends a special forces operative to Venezuela to find out what happened. He bumps heads with the Venezuelan Colonel Diaz who doesn’t want to listen to him or any of the scientists who are trying to warn him about the mega piranha. Diaz later learns of the mega piranha’s existence and instead of listening to the scientists advice on how to kill them while keeping them in the part of the river where they are dammed, he decides to kill them by using horribly rendered CGI missiles. That’s where ‘all hell breaks loose’, or just the piranha
I really don’t know why I just told you all of that. This is a B-movie, the plot doesn’t REALLY matter all that much.
YAY :
- Mega Piranha is hilarious. There are so many examples of horrible special effects, inconsistencies between shots, a love story that develops out of nothing. If you take this movie seriously you’re really missing out.
- A guy in the movie defends himself from piranhas jumping out of the water at him by bicycle kicking them away.
NAY :
- The problem with the bicycle kick scene is that right before it they show piranha jumping out of the water and destroying buildings as large as warehouses. It almost seems like they only rendered the piranha one size, so the scale of them changes often throughout the film. One of the characters will say ‘they’re going to be rhino size soon’, and you’ll say to yourself “they were just the size of a boat”.
- Look, there’s a lot of things I could mention here. The dialogue is bad, the acting is terrible, and a helicopter gets a power/speed boost from an oxygen tank. This is a b-movie though. If I mentioned everything that I would get on a regular movie for I’d be here all day.
Mega Piranha is exactly what it should be. It’s a very silly movie that makes you laugh at it more than you laugh with it. If you liked Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, the movies I mentioned above, or any of the other movies played on SyFy you’re going to enjoy this one. It’s a poorly put together movie, but the laughs you’ll get from it are surely worth the run time.
