Beach House definitely didn’t experience the sophomore slump on their second album Devotion. Could they keep the streak alive with their third album Teen Dream? Teen Dream was released on Sub Pop January 26th of this year.
The short answer to the above question is no. Devotion was my favorite album of 2008. Of the entire year! Teen Dream is a drop-off from that greatness.
YAY :
- This album isn’t terrible or a wash. There’s definitely some very strong tracks, check out “Album Highlights” to find out which are worth listening to.
NAY :
- It’s hard to explain/quantify, but this album just doesn’t have the magic their previous albums did.
Like I said, Teen Dream isn’t a really a bad album, it’s just disappointing when looked at it in comparison to their previous two albums. Talking to Liz about it she said she feels like this is definitely their most accessible album, but agreed that most of their best songs were on other albums. Hopefully they’ll be able to recapture the magic for their fourth album. If not, some other bands are going to and Beach House is going to get lost in the shuffle.
Maybe this will grow on me. Only more time will tell.
