Well, no matter how pissed off ultra-conservatives (the ‘message’) or Italian mothers (its Italian rating) get about Avatar it seems to still be raking in the dough. After this weekends box-office take, the worldwide totals for Avatar are now at 1.64 Billion dollars, which is only 200 million behind the worldwide record currently held by Titanic at 1.84 Billion. Avatar has also just beaten the record held by The Dark Knight for fastest to 500 Million domestic by doing it in 32 days, 13 days faster than The Dark Knight.
After winning the Golden Globe for Best Picture Drama, whether you think it deserved it or not, I don’t think Avatar will have a hard time taking the title from Titanic soon.
I wonder if part of the reason James Cameron is laughing is because he directed both movies which are currently #1 and #2 on the list for highest worldwide gross. I don’t think the fact that he made the highest grossing film of all time, took a long break from feature films, only to then make what will most likely become the new highest grossing film of all time hurts either.
