Street Fighter IV, in my eyes, was one of the best fighting games of all time. It did a great job of combining 3D and 2D while keeping the fights on a 2D plane. It was one of our 10 favorite video games of 2009, so you probably already knew how we felt about it.
A lot of people might be upset that Capcom and the powers that be there decided to release another Street Fighter game a mere 14 months after the release of Street Fighter IV. But, was it a worthwhile update? Or is this challenger going down in two straight rounds?
YAY :
- There are 10 new characters to satisfy your desire to change up your style. The only really questionable new addition is Hakan, but I think he’s a powerful character if you learn how to use him.
- Not only are there 10 new characters, but now every character has two ultra moves. There have also been a lot of subtle gameplay tweaks made to the character roster of the last game.
- Street Fighter IV was a game very similar to Street Fighter II, but where were the bonus stages? This game has bonus stages! Smashing that car in High-Def was a ton of fun.
- The online experience has a ton more features. Now instead of just playing a friend or ranked matches there are team battles and endless battle (where you are in a lobby and you essentially take on all comers until you lose)
- The definitive best new online feature is the addition of replays. You can view your own online fight replays, or you can watch replays of fights by other people. It’s a great addition, even if it is a little dangerous for people like me who enjoy watching other people fight each other.
- Its MSRP is only $40
NAY :
- A few times when looking for a ranked match I was waiting and was then told I was unable to join a game.
- This is the game that Capcom should have released in the first place.
I am admittedly a Street Fighter fan, and this game is very very good. I just wish Capcom would have spent some more time with Street Fighter IV and released this game last summer, or even this past fall instead of releasing Street Fighter IV last year and then Super Street Fighter IV this year. I spent $120 on the collector’s edition of SFIV (I bought the PS3 version late) and now I am very tempted to spend the $40 to own this game. What I’m really getting at is this game is worth it, and you need to own it if you’re a fighting game fan. Don’t be mad at Capcom for releasing this game within 14 months of the last, be mad at them for not releasing this game in the first place.
