People We Admire – J.D. Salinger

Posted by Dillon St. Jean On January - 31 - 2010

Unless you’ve been hiding in seclusion for the past few decades (ironically) you know that J.D. Salinger, great American novelist, has died this past week.  Therefore I felt it would be appropriate to take a look at the writer of The Catcher in the Rye, one of our most famous modern works of literature from this country.  Salinger created Holden Caulfield, who has grown into one of our easiest to associate with teenage characters.  It’s why we have The Catcher in the Rye in so many reading lists across schools in the U.S.  The argument is often made that nowadays the character can not be related to as easily with today’s youth.  However, there’s always someone out there that has plenty to learn from a young man who is clearly unhappy with the way their life is panning out.

Webcomic of the Week – Pictures for Sad Children

Posted by Dillon St. Jean On January - 30 - 2010

I love me some awkward things, and Pictures for Sad Children certainly fits that description.  John Campbell writes and draws an awkward webcomic exploring death, confusion, odd social trends, human and inhuman interaction, and confusion.  He does this in the most peculiar way possible, but doesn’t manage to alienate the reader.  At least, that’s been my experience with it.

Someone Needs to Talk to Marvel

Posted by Dillon St. Jean On January - 30 - 2010

This needs to stop.  Or at least slow down.  Marvel has recently unveiled over twenty variant covers to different Marvel titles.  In wanton disregard for the idea that they’re beating this into the dirt, they’ve pushed the idea that “everybody loves more Deadpool” and refuses to let up.  I suppose after the zombie variants and all the other different themes they’ve been trying out, Deadpool was just a matter of time, but this needs to stop.  Soon.

Weekend Wonderer – Lost

Posted by Jamie Concepcion On January - 30 - 2010

Catch up on Lost, that’s what you should do.  Seriously though, season 6 starts Tuesday Feb 2nd and you’re going to be left out of all the ‘cool people’ conversations unless you know what’s going on in this show.  It’s mathematically impossible (i’m pretty sure) to watch every season before Tuesday if you’ve never seen the show, but you should start as soon as you can. I’m still catching up myself (almost done with season 5). Details/comments below the cut.

Sci-Friday – Blade Runner

Posted by Jamie Concepcion On January - 29 - 2010

I’m kind of bummed I didn’t get to this earlier, because tonight was the last episode of Dollhouse and The Clone Wars featured Mandalorians. I promise after Tuesday everything will be back to normal here.

Blade Runner, is it Ridley Scott’s best film?  Not TOO long ago, well when HD DVD still existed, the Blu-Ray final cut version was released. I sadly have to say I haven’t seen that version yet, but it’s apparently the one to see. It has no narration and a different ending.  Regardless of which version though, you should see this movie.

You Know This By Now

Apple showed the world their new iPad this past Thursday.  I was going to mention the specs and what I think about it, but I think I’d like to use this to show how I feel right now.

Music Video of the Week!! – Dillinger Escape Plan

Posted by Jamie Concepcion On January - 29 - 2010

Ahh!! Sorry about the lack of updates this week. I’m trying to catch up on Lost for next Tuesday and Mass Effect 2 came out this week.

If you asked me what was the best band with a guitar player, the only person left from the original line-up, who liked to wear sleeveless shirts in music videos and with a singer who often would sporadically run off the stage onto audience member’s heads/shoulders, I would HAVE to say Dillinger Escape Plan. Their video for “Panasonic Youth” is under the cut. And yes, some of the guys in the above picture are not in the video. I told you the guitar player with no sleeves was the only original member, remember?

Devil May Cheer

Posted by Jamie Concepcion On January - 27 - 2010

Whether or not you think Bayonetta looks like Sarah Palin she certainly kicks angel ass in this over-the-top title from Platinum Games.  It’s catching a little bit of a bad name for how sexual it can be at times, but we’ll get to that.

Bayonetta is the latest game from Hideki Kamiya, the creator of Devil May Cry. Unlike in Devil May Cry, where you are a person who is part demon killing demons,  you play as a witch who kills angels and ‘warriors of heaven’ throughout the game. While it is an original IP, it feels like a sequel in some ways. Mainly in the theme of the game , and it’s combo-heavy combat system.

Music Monday – Beach House

Posted by Jamie Concepcion On January - 25 - 2010

This post comes later in the day than I wanted it to.  Every Monday from now on I’d like to post an album that I think everyone should check out.  This week’s album is Beach House’s 2008 album Devotion. The songs are under the cut.
