People We Admire – David Tennant

Posted by Dillon St. Jean On December - 31 - 2009

Wow, we haven’t done a People We Admire since Halloween?  Well, no worries, I’m here to fix that.

David Tennant is the current, soon to be former, Doctor Who.  He is the tenth actor to take on the role, and for a lot of people he will be the most memorable.  Tennant brought a spectacular energy and eccentricity to the character.  In his brown or blue suits coated by a long trench coat, Tennant made the character his own, as his predecessors have, but used a personality that made it thrilling to watch him solve mysteries and crises throughout time and space.  I felt it would be nice to take a look at this talented actor, as this Saturday his final portrayal of Doctor Who will air on BBC with Doctor Who: The End of Time Part Two.

Delicious, Delicious Rice

Posted by Dillon St. Jean On December - 30 - 2009

God I love rice.  Just to think that eating some rice, along with slaughtering 365 samurai, would lead me to the meaning of life is just a wonderful dream.  A wonderful, blood red, nightmarish dream.  J. P. Kalonji’s 365 Samurai and a Few Bowls of Rice is an interesting comic to say the least.  In a bloody and fiendish quest, we see how a sword-wielding loner is often the best character to send out soul-searching.

Video of the Week – Darksiders

Posted by Jamie Concepcion On December - 30 - 2009

Two notable games come out next Tuesday.  They are Darksiders and Bayonetta.  I’m looking forward to Bayonetta a little more than I am Darksiders, but I know Andrew is super excited for Darksiders, so as a favor to him I’m featuring that instead.  There’s a Bayonetta trailer under the cut also though .

Both games look similar in style, except Darksiders relies more on exploration than just combat.

My Prophecy Has Been Realized

Posted by Dillon St. Jean On December - 27 - 2009

I told you.

The solicits are in, and in March we’re going to be seeing FIVE separate Deadpool comics released.  Five of them.  That’s… that’s just… wow.  I don’t really have the power to sum up what that means.  Beyond that, we’re being given a glimpse of what is to come, which is the Deadpool Corps.  Deadpool, Lady Deadpool, the head of Zombie Deadpool, Kidpool, and an as-of-yet unnamed dog with a Deadpool costume (Dogpool, perhaps.  Maybe Deadpup.)  Yikes.

Webcomic of the Week – Hark! A Vagrant

Posted by Dillon St. Jean On December - 27 - 2009

Okay.  So have you ever read some really good comics that poke fun at history?  If your answer is no, then you’re likely not reading Kate Beaton’s comic Hark! A Vagrant.  The Nova Scotia born artist covers all sorts of historical figures and moments, from the crazy antics of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne to the grooming of the Kennedy’s to reach higher political office.  The humor is all there, and the historical accuracy is… well, I’d prefer to read these comics than to read an actual history book.  This makes history extraordinary.

Out of This World

Posted by Andrew Witts On December - 27 - 2009

There have been very few times in this closing decade that a movie has come out which has furthered the dynamic vision of feature filmmaking. If anything, the past ten years have shown a declining slope in creativity for movies across the board with constant remakes, reboots, sequels, adaptations, and not to mention the summer blockbusters that have an utter disregard for storytelling. When James Cameron left features behind in 1999 to spend years filming the ocean floor, there seemed to be a rift in the industry. This changed the moment that test audiences began posting their reactions to the first footage of his follow-up to the most watched movie ever: Titanic. Avatar is the movie that everyone was raving about and that no commoner could lay there eyes on…until now. It seems almost poetic that in a decade filled with commercializing and capitalizing on terrible franchises, that Avatar arrives “five minutes to midnight” and absolutely changes the way that movies can be made, felt, and experienced. In the 1930′s, King Kong opened people up to the possibilities that movies had of offering a fantastic escape. Later, in the 1950′s the sci-fi renaissance once again impacted audiences in a way that it furthered the possibilities of special effects. In 2009, James Cameron has changed the name of the game with Avatar because everything else is simply just a movie.

Let’s Hear it for War Machine!!

Posted by Jamie Concepcion On December - 24 - 2009

This is another quick video-based post. It’s a trailer for Iron Man 2 and all I really want to say about it is, if the last scene doesn’t get you excited for this movie you must be dead inside.

Video of the Week!! – Mass Effect 2

Posted by Jamie Concepcion On December - 24 - 2009

I know this game doesn’t release until January 26th, but a cinematic trailer was released this Tuesday that could fight the Iron Man 2 trailer (give me a few minutes to get that up) for the title of  “Coolest Thing You’ll See All Week”.  I’m not going to say anything else, because this is really just one of those videos where you should watch immediately.

Blah, Blah, Blah, Family Guy

Posted by Jamie Concepcion On December - 22 - 2009

Family Guy’s Something Something Something Darkside is their version of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.  It starts off with a power outage and Peter deciding to tell another Star Wars story (like he did in Blue Harvest).  The total run-time is a little less than an hour long and instead of explaining the whole plot, which most people already know, I’m just going to tell you what I thought worked and didn’t work.  This review is quite short, so it’ll be a quick read.

Webcomic of the Week – Let’s Be Friends Again

Posted by Dillon St. Jean On December - 19 - 2009

So I thought I might try a little something different on the site by taking a look every week at a different webcomic I feel deserves a nice spotlight.  This week the subject is Let’s Be Friends Again by Curt Franklin and Chris Haley.  LBFA is a comic that does the occasional comic book commentary, making jokes about things like Batman and Robin, or Blackest Night.  And frankly, they do a damn good job of making those jokes effective.
